- Social Issues
- Does Nestlé use genetically modified foods in any of its products?
- With our vast worldwide experience in the food industry, we recognize the potential gene technology has, in the longer term, to improve the quality, availability and nutritional value of food. We support a responsible application of gene technology for food production based on sound scientific research. In addition we concur with the shared opinion of numerous independent scientific bodies and international organizations that such crops are as safe as their traditional counterparts.
The safety of our products and the integrity of the ingredients from which they are manufactured are paramount to Nestlé. Genetically modified crops, as all raw materials used by Nestlé, comply with strict regulatory and safety evaluations. We will continue to use ingredients derived from genetically modified crops wherever appropriate provided their safety is proven, as required for all ingredients.
As a global food manufacturer and marketer, Nestlé takes into consideration local needs; cultural differences and consumer preference as well as attitudes concerning the use of ingredients derived from genetically modified crops. Wherever voluntary labeling schedules are introduced by governments, we will adhere to the position of that nations' food industry association.

- Cocoa Child Labor
- The global chocolate and cocoa industry is launching a region-wide action program to promote responsible labor and sustainable farming practices in West African cocoa growing, in partnership with African governments, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United States Department of Labor, leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local farmer organizations.
The launch of the action program follows an international meeting in Accra, Ghana, attended by more than 150 stakeholders engaged in improving the well being of cocoa farming families and workers throughout West Africa. The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Government of Ghana, USAID and the global chocolate/cocoa industry sponsored the conference.
The region-wide program is the next step in more than 12 months' work by a broad international alliance of industry, governments, leading experts on labor and agricultural issues, activists, consumer coalitions and other stakeholders. In late 2001, the industry signed an International Protocol to ensure that cocoa is grown without abusive child or forced labor.
"This action program will touch the lives of tens of thousands of cocoa farming families, while creating permanent, positive change in their communities," said John Rowsome, president of the Confectionery Manufacturers Association of Canada (CMAC) and a participant in the Ghana conference."Working closely with our partners, we are focusing our resources on where they will do the greatest good - on the ground, at the individual farm level."
To promote responsible cocoa farming, the pilot programs will directly address labor practices on cocoa farms while seeking to improve the overall well being of the cocoa farming community. While varied and holistic in approach, the pilot programs are broadly grouped into two categories
For additional information on this subject, please visit the Chocolate Manufacturers Association's Web site.

- Chocolate Appearance: Why does chocolate sometimes have a white or gray look to it?
- Real chocolate has a large amount of cocoa butter in its formulation that can separate from the other ingredients. The cocoa butter will rise to the surface when subjected to extreme heat. Then when cooled, the surface of the chocolate can appear as looking a cloudy gray or white or have spots on it. This is known as "chocolate bloom". Bloom may cause the chocolate to lose its normal, creamy texture and flavor. The age of a product is not a factor regarding bloom. Bloom can happen on very fresh chocolate. We recommend that real chocolate be stored between 60-70 degrees.
- Chocolate History/Production: How is chocolate made? What is the history of chocolate?
- Chocolate History: Who invented milk chocolate?
- In 1876 in Vevey, Switzerland, Daniel Peter, a chocolate manufacturer and neighbor of Henri Nestlé, devised a way of adding Nestlé Condensed Milk to chocolate, creating the product we enjoy today known as milk chocolate. His chocolate company, Peter, Cailler, Kohler later merged with Nestlé.
- Foreign Confections: How can I get a Nestlé confection I tried in another country?
Many Nestlé Confections are marketed worldwide and not imported to the U.S. by Nestlé USA. They may sometimes have a very noticeable taste difference depending on the country and/or region of the world and are formulated to meet the preferences of the majority of consumers in those areas. However, there are some confection items that Nestlé USA does import, such as Perugina, Baci, After Eight, and Carlos V.
- Ingredient/Nutrition - Caffeine: Does chocolate have a lot of caffeine it in it?
The amount of caffeine (a naturally occurring substance and chemical in many foods) found in a chocolate bar is minimal compared to a cup (6-oz) of regular brewed coffee. Actually the amounts found in a chocolate bar can be closer to a cup of decaffeinated coffee.
For example, a 1.55-oz NESTLÉ® CRUNCH® bar has less than 12 mg. of caffeine, whereas a 6-oz cup of brewed coffee has between 65 and 150 mg. of caffeine.
- Ingredient/Nutrition - Caffeine: Does white chocolate contain caffeine?
-
White chocolate contains an insignificant amount of caffeine because it does not contain chocolate liquor. Practically all of the caffeine in chocolate bars comes from the chocolate liquor. There is about 2.5 mg. caffeine in a 1.5 oz. serving of white chocolate.
- Ingredient/Nutrition - Peanuts/Nuts: Why does Nestlé state “nut and or peanut traces” on candy that does not have nuts or peanuts?
- Some Nestlé USA's confection products that do not have peanuts/nuts added as an ingredient have a statement regarding "peanut/nut" listed at the end of the ingredient statement. This is done for those people who are allergic to peanut protein or nuts. In many cases, our chocolate products, both those with peanuts as an ingredient and those without peanuts/nuts, are manufactured on the same production line. Even though each product is manufactured individually in separate production runs, and we exercise absolute care in the cleaning procedures between the runs, there is still a remote possibility that a peanut and/or nut or peanut/nut fragment (trace) may find its way into a product where peanuts are not otherwise added as an ingredient. Because even a trace amount of peanut/nuts is able to elicit a reaction in people with severe peanut/nut allergies, we feel it is best to call out "peanut/nut traces" at the end of the ingredient statement as a precautionary measure.
- NESTLÉ® BABY RUTH®: How did the bar get its name?
- The rumor that the NESTLÉ® BABY RUTH® candy bar was named for Babe Ruth, the home run king, is false. The name honors President and Mrs. Grover Cleveland's daughter, endearingly referred to as "Baby Ruth."
- NESTLÉ® BUTTERFINGER®: How did the bar get its name?
- NESTLÉ® BUTTERFINGER®, introduced in 1928 by the Curtiss Candy Company, got its name through a public contest. "Butterfinger" was a popular expression of the day, used by sportscasters to describe athletes who couldn't keep a grip on the baseball or football.
- NESTLÉ® CRUNCH®: How long does it take to make a NESTLÉ® CRUNCH® bar?
From start to finish, it takes approximately 50 minutes.
- NESTLÉ® GOOBERS®: Where did the name come from?
- "Goober" is Southern slang for peanut.
- Storage: Does freezing/refrigerating chocolate bars extend their shelf life?
Unfortunately, freezing or refrigerating any type of chocolate does not make them stay fresher longer. Chocolate should always be stored between 60-70 degrees.
- WONKA® : Are the sugar candies peanut/nut free?
Almost all the WONKA® candies are peanut/nut free except WONKA® OOMPAS® and WONKA® Bar. We recommend consumers should always read the ingredient statement for the most current information.
